I finally made it to Lämmi to hunt for zander for the first time this year. We did catch perch, so no one will go hungry, and now we can calmly blank as well. In the morning we tried here and there, and in one place we found a school of bream with the fish finder and started giving it a go, since zander usually moves together with bream. Dad stayed by the sled, while I went a bit farther away to try my luck, and after a while Dad shouted that he had a big fish on! I started running toward him, but a barrage of unfiltered words made it clear the fish had got away.
After a while I got a bite too, but it didn’t stay on. Then the school moved off and we went on searching. We didn’t have to look long before a new school was found with the Lowrance LIVE transducer. Dad stayed by the sled again, while I went roaming. And after a while Dad had his first keeper zander, exactly 46 cm! His face was glowing! Dad kept casting for a long time, while I moved around more actively, but I had no bites, although there was plenty of fish showing on the screen.
After a few hours Dad decided to start fishing for roach instead and stayed sitting right where the fish finder showed the school. I, meanwhile, went on looking for zander. I just kept driving, drilling, trying, then driving again, and so on until 3 p.m. Then I thought that soon it would be time to head home, so I went back and decided to try one last spot before the end, since the guys had been sitting in the same place for quite a long time already. When I got there, one guy was just landing a zander. I didn’t join the main group, but rather tried a bit farther away, drilled one hole, lowered in the LIVE transducer, and a very nice picture appeared! Bream and zander were constantly moving around. I dropped the lure in, worked it a bit, and at first I caught an undersized one. After a while I got a keeper zander, and then another keeper five minutes later! But after 15 minutes the school was gone and there was nothing left to catch.
So I went over to Dad, and his bucket was full of nice roach. Two bream also got away, and I managed to land one bream on the jigging spoon as well.
A solid day for both of us!
